Summer, it seems, has as good as drawn shut for another year. Went out fi fag today and was, to say the least, CHAPPING! So as winter is closing in I thought an exit from London was needed. Today, bar the heavy duty dentistry, was a beyond a happy day for I. Mid an unplanned dig through some dusty crates, looking for nothing in particular, I had one of thoughs euphoric, never happens to me, biblical moments, when I found a record I have been pining for for months raised its tonk arm with an almighty slap up in my grill. Bad Boy Talk, is with out a shadow of a doubt the peak of [Mad] Cobra's career. His vibe nowadays is on that contemporary, aggs but cheesy, all to popular with your shoreditch trendy, soulless dancehall. Half is recent stuff will no doubt be featuring on "mix tape" (Traktor mix) winging its way, via some Italo electro, to the speakers of American Apparel very soon. But this LP is HYPE! Yush, the tune fatured is an absolute peeeeercie, but within the card sleeve many more unsung classics sit waiting to be blasted. Get your self a copy, you won't regret. TRUSTLES!

Got a couple of fine midlands compendiums for all this week. Olbi Iyah is the original bad man selector since day, TRUST! Since we were youths he has been compiling a healthy wall full of the finest reggae cuts that would make the most seasoned of collectors week at the knees. Moving to Birmingham from Cambridge some time ago now he has been making some serious shapes on the scene there and is the out and out highlight on the Rhubarb Radio weekly rosta, with his show Version Galore. Definitely worth a clock team!

The first mix is a wall to wall quaker! With the most concise selection of this ilk I have heard this is Olbi's SLENG TENG SPESHI.

So a weekend of extreme mashedness and missions is over. Having lost a car, a bank balance and some of my marbles its back to the grind for some underground brassness!!! Murkle smacked it with some bubbly bubbly So Am vibes for a maxi saturday night brock out. Some lesser highlights were sleeping on the motor way and hiding in stinging nettles, but its all part and parcel as the yearly escapades of the Secret Garden Party have drawn to a close.

I recorded these 7 inch excursions last week but now seems like a fitting time to provide the service of post party riddims to cater for either, the mass cotch or the bouncy bouncy. I am mad on these strictly 7's mixes at the moment. I went on a little mission a while back to the wonders of the St Nic's Markets stall in bristol, and this first mix has some of the pleasure I dug out.

Its a little 20 minutes affair (haven't busted one of these for a while), they seemed to be quite popular so I thought it was about time for another. On it is by far my out and out favourite Johnny Osbourne tune ever. 'PEOPLE WATCH ME' is a beautiful riddim with some of the most on point lyrics I have ever heard.

Here is a selection of the toughest dub music from the past and the future. A compendium of sub bashing percies from the likes of Disrupt, BDF & Dub Student and Mungo's Hi-Fi. I have included some of High Tone's re-fix's from the recently acquired 'DUB BOX'.

I hadn't been buying too much Dub of late, until some inspirational viewing of the steppers system at ST Paul's. This was a killer rig, part Channel One i heard someone say. It took up a whole street with wall to wall speakers at either end. It was an ear destroying experience to say the least, and re-inspired me to link up some new dub riddims for the collection.

This mix is a a little off the cuff but its most certainly a preliminary to something much bigger to come in the future. I rocked out the KP3 for some siren vibes, along side the trusty sampler. Strictly vinyl through out, and hopefully a varied enough mix of old and new fi all to enjoy. (check the last tune. An absolute killer from Led Piperz via High Tone, GWAN THE FRENCHIES!!!)

Nic Bennet and Marcroix Merrbelly Hubert Pimlico Smith (genuine name), are making some lovely tracks in the illustration game at present. Their work is is a culmination of photography, drawing, ice hockey and weed. Both members of Pikey Island in Bristol, they do most of their screen prints in caravans suspended at a 45 degree angle. They made a zine recently called Bloody Nora which is nicely spicey and they currently have a range of jerk sauce coming out, made specifically for rizla and hockey tape, another will probably follow soon. I don't want to turn these pages of useless rambles into a place of hate, quite the opposite, but with my new place of work slap bang in the middle of the east end of London I remembered something I read in Adbusters some time ago now.

Its a painfully true article about western culture (or lack of), which whether you like it or not, we are all victims of in some degree. Whether it be wearing the freshest, quirkiest garms, incessantly following a niche dance genre and digging out those impossible to find, rubbish quality, mp3's, trimming the handlebars on your bike down so thin your thumbs keep one and other warm or living in a squat that your parents could probably buy 10 times over, to the opposing side, everyone of us has succumb to some sort of trend.

'HIPSTER' by Douglas Haddow was published in 2008, but as time seems to go on it becomes more and more relevant. I have to honest, Adbusters is, a lot of the time, a little too much on the anarchy tip and I don't rate a lot of the articles, but you can form your own opinion. Something I do find funny though, this article seems to be relevant to so many trends that Adbusters and their readers, i'm sure fit the description (almost) as much as say a Vice reader.

They do have some decent stuff though. Its all love!

I have just been lucky enough, thanks to a tip off from a like minded breh, to bag what may be my most prized vinyl purchase to date. High Tone, a seven piece dub outfit from Lyon in France, compiled this quad stacked, 10 inch box-set in 2008. Featuring remixes of artists such as Mungos Hi-Fi, Led Pipers, The Machinist and Brain Damage, they initially released 800, with hand printed sleeves and box, and have just allowed the final 200 to go (which they have). Once I have got the records I will post up some samples of these guys maxi stees, for now here is a youtube vid.....

Its that time of year again. St Paul's Carnival kicks off in massive style this weekend with a hench list of systems and DJ's ready to run track and wobble gut for all on the beautiful streetS of Bristol. If you have been before you'll know what a vibe the whole weekend is, and with everyones favourite Bristol radio station Ujima in charge of the program on the green stage, you know it will be a banger. Last years adverse weather conditions look set, fingers crossed, to not plague the jam again, but you never know in the west. Below is the full program of systems and performers for saturday, it looks set to be s stormer, so make sure you land it! 2 things i am massively excited about are Earl 16, closing Saturday night and also Troy Ellis, blees the 9 o'clock slot, ROOTS CLASH YA HEARD!

Heavy sounds from Joker on this video. He's definitely one to check, if you haven't already. His productions are right on the future beat shit that i have come to love so much. Synth loopy with ultra gully beats to match make for maximum skank out. Never seen him live, I have missed him both times he has played at a night i've been to, but Nomad, the MC on this one, made a surprise appearance at Bare Jokes in Brighton last year with Plastician.
Mary Anne Hobbs is most certainly a prominent figure in the promotion of alternative music, and her radio show has moments of absolute genius, but i can't help but find her slightly irritating. Whether its her voice, which is, lets be honest, more suited to a M&S food add, or her weird obsetion with PVC trouser, I don't know. In all fairness though, massive credit goes to her for being the corporate face of the darker side of dance, and holding that title well. And also for pushing many an unsung producer or MC, check her Youtube channel for many more videos of this ilk.

Little tune mission turned up some treats today, before bollock sized hail stones rained on the parade.
'DUB IN AFRICA' by Prince Fari and The Arabs is a mystical outing in classic dub. First pressed in 1979, the LP features such adored melodies as 'Cry Tuff + The Originals' (included in the post) and 'Big Fight Dub'. Packed with 10 heavy weight dubbed out classics it is well worth a look. This was his fifth album by the time of release, its obvious that by this period, he had his sound mastered. Its an album to be listened to on some rough duty monitors, this ain't a laptop ting. The copy I got is a repress, Pressure Sounds, to be precise. These guys are on some serious releases at the moment. Another couple by them worth looking at is 'Santic & friends. An even harder SHADE OF BLACK' (Various Artists) and 'Kool Roots' by Earth & Stone (featured in one of the mixes on here). Both 'Dub in Africa' and 'Santic & Friends' are available on itunes for anyone without a record player.

'Gathering Israel' by Jah Woosh was purchase number 2, another dubbed out, summer cotching riddim for the ear drums. Its a highly vocalised affair, with Woosh making his classic dubbed out anthem 'Walls of Babylon' the closing track.
The track featured below is not one from this album, I failed to find any, so I thought i would include another Woosh rinser 'Peace in the Ghetto'.

FOUNDATION A FOUNDATION

Junior Byles holds, in my opinion, a title that few can claim. An originator in every sense of the word, his music blesses any system its run through. Safe to say the man has a belly of goat an a swagger all the way past the bus stop to match. This particular riddim is a Scratch Perry and Meakel production and is just the kind of tune we all need in the run up to next weekend (St Paul's Carnival). Not Byles' most notorious tune but I would go so far as to say, one of his best. I picked this up at a top little stall open on saturdays in the north lanes in Brighton. The 2 guys who were there were wickedly safe, and it was through their direction i found it.

Its all about these little stores popping up all over at the moment. The day of the independent record shop, unfortunately seems to be passed. The are still a few holding, knuckles white, on to their wares, but the heavy weight pressure of internet phenomenons such as Spotify and such alike seem to be killing of the last few. These little specialist stalls seem to be a bi-product of all of this, and I have to say, I rate it. Personal service, chaps who know what's up. Keep up the good work, and people, support them! Buy music! The crackle of the vinyl is worth a million iTunes downloads!

A photographer that i came accross the other day at work and i thought I would post her up. Diana lives and works in Montreal, Canada. Her work is a satirical look at the woes of living in such a changable envirounment. All's well on first glance but after a little more examination is clear that all is not what it seems in her model world. The actual prints of the pictures are HUGE, which makes more sense, unfortunately all i can offer is these small samples. She isn't exhibiting in the UK at the moment unfortunately, but if you would like to see her work in a better light, there will be 2 prints in the office until wednesday so bell me up innit. Alternitively (a shameless plug here), the next issue of Next Level showcases her work along with some other great Montreal based artists, so go buy!

A little follow on from the DaM-Funk plug i did a while ago (check it out if you haven't already), Benji B is another Jazz/Hip Hop/Funk masher upper, sometimes rocking on 1-xtra. His myspace has a few decent dubplates worth hearing, and he has a string of forth coming dates in the UK and Europe. He is London based and played Brainfeeder this weekend along with my boy FlyLo. Unfortunately dew to my accountant making a few discrepancies is my monthly budget, I had to settle for a yard party with a band in a van, different story.

Benji has a hand in running a big night hear in london called Deviation Session, I have included a video below, robbed from his myspace, showing the ultra vibes that lot are pushing down there.

I was lucky enough to see Trentemoller Live last year in August, getting wobbly on the side of a hill in The Mulverns (thanks for the hook ups Dan). It was a moving show, he vibrates between moody, atmospheric sounds scapes and sheer ultra gully brocking out! His music is of the glitchy, squeak and pop, min tech ilk but works on approximately a million levels. Live, with his 'band', is a spectacle i consider my self lucky to have witnessed. Unfortunately they don't play many gigs, he does a number of DJ sets worldwide (clock the myspace below), and is playing Melt Festival in Germany this summer if anyone fancies? He is on point in many respects musically, but also aesthetically.....

Its one of those irresistible 'Bookerzines' gracing the shelve of many an artsy bookshop and gallery world wide. The current issue is a celebration of photography, art and ideas in the Persian Gulf. If you know me, you will probably be aware that i am an avid/seasonal (part timer to all the pros) sea fisher. Something useful (or not, depending on your view) that i took away from my time in Brighton. Another thing that I rate bare is a good saying, a persey that i heard in Berlin was 'Alter Shalter', translated means 'Old Light Switch', but in conversation is a put down from a yout to an elder. In English we don't have anything nearly as good as that for a good bit of ageism, but what we do have, thanks to the great fishermen of this fine island, is possibly my number one saying of all. It is used as a means of hollering your fishing boys as you pack up and chip back to yard. It is the seaman's way of saying 'safe' 'in a bit' 'take it easy', but encompasses all of these and more in to one beautiful treat of linguistics. The said phrase is...............

As i hope you will agree this is the English language at its absolute best, and if you do feel the same as me about this poetic piece you will understand my complete joy at finding this literary gem in a small book shop in Broadway Market. Its a catalogue for from 1971 for.... you guessed it, fishing. Nathan at Spalstique, a general dapper dan, and always a good source of the obscure, linked me this absolute treat for the senses. He introduced me to Dam Funk (the Stones Throw Records artist whom is most definately of this ilk, if not the creator of the riddim) a month or so ago, and i rate it bare. It is, from what i can fathom, the heroin induced cavortings of the ultra bohemians. New York based by the sound of things. If you are the type of person that enjoys loosely jammin funky rifts on your mega retro Moog Synth, whilst getting your super slender girl (one of many, who, dons a tight weave/fro and only wears silk thongs) to prep your already withered veins and rocking out (in a very subdued, Gill Scott Heron style) to space aged beats and breaks, then this is for you.

Somebody showed me these photographs by Pieter Hugo some time ago. I had forgotten about them until recently watching one of DA's (David Attenborough) many african spectacles. They are some of the most incredible photographs, and the ones i have chosen to post up here are merely a taster of this series. I have never heard of Pieter Hugo before, he is represented by a South African gallery, so i'll take it that is where he is from. I have always had mad love for Hyenas, they are alway depicted as the scallies of the African plaines, I personally rate them as top dog (no pun intended) in those ends. Word in the field is that they have the strongest bite in the animal kingdom, BIG! i will allow Pieter to explain a little bit more about the pictures himself, clock the links for more info and of course more pictures.

After the popularity of the last 'WONK HOP' mix i have been pon a mission for some guest mixes from the movers and shakers of the said genre. Paul White is the owner of One Handed Records (i think), the label that has pioneered the UK sound. Some of the tunes featured in this mix are also in the earlier 'WONK HOP' mix but there are also some unheard dubs in there for some cracked out head nodding. If your into this sort of stuff clock Paul's myspace for tour dates and links to other related artists. Supporting this genre is something that i feel strongly about, I genuinely think that the likes of Paul, Bullion, Hudson Mowhawke etc have the freshest sound around at the moment. The music that these guys are making works on so many levels, if you haven't been to see them live i can strongly recommend it, maxi vibes! This mix is from Mary Anne Hobb's radio show, which again, if you haven't clocked, do. Get on BBC Iplayer and have a listen It gets my vote as the only reason to pay a license fee.

I seem to be on a mild South America tip this week so i will keep it rolling. I came across Arthur Verocai on a random myspace adventure (the one where you have a starting point, someone you have usually heard of, and then via 'friends' links you meander your way through pages upon pages of other peoples hard graft) which resulted in me sticking the Jack to Phono in the stepsisters system and smoking a massive fag. His music is, as described, Jazz, Funk and Folk, but myspace seems to have minimal options with regard to what genre you play, so i will let you make your own mind up. From my research the guy has been around for years and is as much a conductor as a musician, playing with a 36 piece orchestra in 1972 for his self titled album, which again is well worth a look.

An American hip hop artist i have always favoured for his complete refusal to adhere to the 'bitch's and ho's' and 'blig bling' aspects of the said genre is Edan, or The Humble Magnificent. I like his stuff for many of the same reasons i liked the work of the UK artists of the past 9 years, but the majority of them crumbled under the weight of their over dressed and over fed rivals accross the pond. Edan, being of their native tongue, didn't ever have anything to prove. He is still churning out fresh vibes for thoughs that no. His live show is quite simply one of the best thing i have ever seen live (i say that about a few things, but its definitely in the top five). I remember he played whilst i lived in Brighton in possibly the worst club in history (The Ocean Rooms) and still boyed it beyond belief. Cock the video for a mere taste of his skills. If you want to hear his vocal skills at full throttle i suggest getting on his website, clocking discography, and going buying his shit. ITS DOPE

Happy bank holiday crew. The sun is out (in bristol anyway), and i'm indoors writing this. Not for much longer though, going on a photo mission somewhere in the deep south west. Anyway, i'm back in bristol fi weekend and me have access to all me records. I was going to do a history of english reggae, but i am still searching for a couple of records. MASSIVE ART POST!!!!!! I was checking some books in the office today, they were catalogues from some old exhibitions that the company i work for did some promotional work with. I was aware of the first artist David Choe, he is one of a new breed of painters taking inspiration from a multitude of sources. Antony Micallef's paintings are a mash up of varying styles with obvious touches of graffiti mixed up with brush skills that are second to non. Everyone knows the feeling of finding a record that makes you want to throw some serious shapes! The Limp Twins did that (and still do that) for me. I was made aware of them a few years ago. To late unfortunately as they are no longer together. The duo comprised of Quantic, the well known Brighton based producer, musician and founder of Tru Thoughts Records, and Russ Porter, lesser known but by no means lesser talented. Another Brighton based musician and singer. They only made one LP together, a great shame as 'Tales from beyond the groove' is an absolute persy! Serious funky licks mixed up with some ultra inspirational beats and breaks. Apparently they split due to "musical differences" or some shit like that, but, in a weird sort of way i quite like the fact that they only made minimal amounts of tracks as i am left wanting more. I highly recommend getting hold of their record. One of their tracks is featured on an old Breakin Bread mixtape, which is actually where I first heard them. I am up and running slightly later than anticipated, but BOVERED!!!! alot has happened, I am now Tufnell Park based and and working a crazy amount. Friday's mix, for this weekend only is landing today, sunday. Some serious BASS WEIGHT for your ears. its another short one but there is an extremely exclusive dubplate on there. Its the LV refix of Portico Quartet's song Knee Deep In The North Sea. That shits never hitting the shops peeps so enjoy!!!! I was lucky enough to attend the opening of 'Crimes of Passion' on friday. Its a celebration of the Bristol street arts scene, set in the not so street (more gentrified) premises of the RWA (a scaled down west country version of the Royal Academy in the Big Smoke). As with many of these things it was hit and miss, with some of the pieces emulating what some may say 'bate vibes' (no names!). Another trend that seemed to settle in nicely at the exhibition was the fact it was sponsored by RedBull. No surprises there. I heard word that they were confirming a deal to be sole supplier of drinks at Jade Goodey's funeral, which again would be no surprise as it seems nothing is out of reach of the big RB nowadays.
Anyway back to the point, yeh, the exhibition is well worth checking out, their is the most incredible SickBoy canvas in it, which is reason to go if nothing else. No pictures of that as i forgot my camera so, unfortunately, the only picture that came out on my phone is the one below of another amazing piece, I don't know who it is by i'm afraid, but its the city of Bristol turned into a Diplodocus.

Wax poetics is hands down my favourite magazine at the moment. Its New york based and is any records collectors must have read for the shitter. The writers in it are amazing and all collectors them selves. The point of the magazine, i suppose, is to re-expose lost or forgotten songs from days old, but as well as that there i loads of information on up and coming release from a host of different genres. Every issue there is a theme such as soul, hip hop etc... also there are stacks of interviews, recently they had an amazing Slick Rick interview which was also full of classic photos of "The Ruler" himself.......

Well worth a look if you are into your records collecting, even if your not, its packed with top articles and alike for all to enjoy.

Yet another amazing painter that i came across in berlin. This chaps work is spell binding. Its a mash up of various mediums and an absolute treat on the eyes. Being that i am reading Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy (Northern Light etc...) isaw it most fitting to display what i see as Radek's depiction of the big G, my man (or bear), Iorek Byrnson. I had heard of this record shop in St Nic's market in Bristol time ago, and even tried to find it twice. But sod being sod i found it today when my bank balance was definitely saying 'no no no no no' but my head was saying 'damn straight'. The guy that runs it is a top, top boy and the vibes are live in his selection, so as a result, mr natwest is down £30 but my needles are getting their long over due fix of heartical vibes (seeeeeen!)

One complete gem i managed to relocate after not buying it from ebay time ago was the Trojan rerelease of Big Youth's Screaming Target......

Just returned from a whirl wind tour of Berlin. BIG. Bare orange juice in eyes, techno and meat. Went to a decent market that consisted of some good record stores but with current exchange rates and general over pricing of vinyl in germany i didn't buy too much. I found an amazing Saxon Sounds live LP from '94, some SERIOUS riddims on it. I also found a little Kool Mo Dee treat in amongst the UB40 records*.

*germans seem to love UB40 like Jimmy o'raw on speed, a little too much for my liking. they had at least 2 LP's, EP's, Singles or Compilations in every genre box. My personal favourite being "Black Music", which, of course, had a sub heading of 'reggae, hip hop and soul'
